At Sacred Lotus, we believe in the magic of nature to enhance your beauty and well-being. This month, we’re diving into three powerful, natural treatments: Qasil powder for skin, a coffee cocoa facial, and a hot oil treatment for hair. We’ll explore their benefits, how to use them, and share simple recipes you can try at home!
1. Qasil Powder: Your All-Natural Skin Savior
Qasil powder has long been treasured by Somali women for its incredible skin-healing properties. This powder, made from the leaves of the gob tree, is a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it perfect for cleansing, exfoliating, and brightening your skin.
Benefits of Qasil Powder:
- Natural Cleanser & Exfoliator: Gently cleanses away dirt, oil, and dead skin cells without stripping your skin’s natural moisture.
- Anti-Acne & Anti-Inflammatory: Its natural antibacterial properties help reduce breakouts and calm inflamed skin.
- Brightens & Softens Skin: Regular use helps even skin tone and leaves your face feeling soft and smooth.
How to Use Qasil Powder:
1. Mix Qasil powder with a little water to create a smooth paste.
2. Gently massage it onto your face in circular motions.
3. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.
DIY Recipe:
- 1 tbsp Qasil powder
- 1 tsp honey (for extra hydration)
- A few drops of rose water (for soothing effects)
Mix the ingredients into a smooth paste and apply to your face. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water to reveal glowing, refreshed skin.
2. Coffee Cocoa Facial: Energize & Rejuvenate
A coffee cocoa facial is a luxurious yet easy way to brighten and firm your skin. The combination of caffeine from coffee and antioxidants from cocoa makes this mask a true skin treat. I often use this prior to a night out (or the morning after) and it is exceptionally good for melanated skin tones!
Benefits of Coffee Cocoa Facial:
- Boosts Circulation: The caffeine in coffee stimulates blood flow, reducing puffiness and brightening your complexion.
- Rich in Antioxidants: Cocoa fights free radicals, protecting your skin from environmental damage and premature aging.
- Tightens & Firms: This facial helps firm the skin and leaves it with a healthy, natural glow.
How to Use Coffee Cocoa Mask:
1. Mix ground coffee and cocoa powder with water or milk until it forms a paste.
2. Apply evenly to your face and neck.
3. Leave on for 15–20 minutes, then gently scrub off while rinsing with warm water.
DIY Recipe:
- 1 tbsp ground coffee
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp yogurt or milk (for hydration)
- 1 tsp honey (optional for added moisture)
-1-2 tsp oil (coconut is our fave!)
Mix all ingredients and apply to clean skin. Let the mask sit for 15 minutes, then rinse off while gently exfoliating with circular motions. Your skin will feel rejuvenated and glowing!
3. Hot Oil Treatment: Repair & Nourish Your Hair
Hot oil treatments are a fantastic way to revitalize dry or damaged hair. The heat allows the oils to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, leaving your hair silky, shiny, and hydrated.
Benefits of Hot Oil Treatment:
- Deeply Moisturizes: Hydrates dry, brittle hair, making it softer and more manageable.
- Strengthens Hair: Regular use can prevent breakage and split ends, promoting stronger, healthier hair.
- Promotes Scalp Health: Massaging warm oil into your scalp increases circulation, encouraging healthy hair growth.
Added Benefits from Our Homemade Hair Oil Ingredients:
Lavender oil: Known for its soothing properties, lavender oil can improve scalp health and stimulate hair follicles
Peppermint oil: With its stimulating properties, peppermint oil can increase circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth
Coconut Oil: Rich in fatty acids, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, nourishing the hair with vitamins and minerals
Rosemary: is known to improve cellular generation and is often used for enhancing hair thickness and growth
Grapeseed oil: Provides moisture, strength and shine. The oil is a natural sealant that keeps moisture in the hair’s follicle, preventing dryness and breakage
How to Use Hot Oil Treatment:
1. Heat 1 cup each of Grapeseed and Coconut oil on the stove on low heat.
2. Add 4 tablespoons of Rosemary (I use grounded dry herbs).
3. Add 10 drops each of lavender and peppermint oil.
4. Heat until all ingredients are integrated well (about 10 minutes). Cool prior to applying. Make sure it’s warm but not too hot.
5. Massage the oil into your scalp and hair, focusing on the ends.
6. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic first, then add an extra head wrap/scarf on top. Leave it on for 30 minutes to an hour or leave it overnight like we love to do. Just make sure the hair is wrapped well to prevent leaks!
7. Rinse out thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner.
For best results, repeat this treatment once a week.
Use more or less depending on how much hair you have, how many heads you plan to treat and if you plan to make leftovers. I have kept the oil in the fridge for 4 weeks without any issues!
Check out our recent Instagram and Facebook video to see us doing a hot oil hair treatment for all the girlies including myself, our family friend (teenager) and my 3 year old.
