"You're so quiet." "You always go with the flow." "It's like you never get upset."

These are just a few of the comments I've heard over the years. For a long time, I believed these things about myself. I allowed these external perceptions to create a narrative that I was somehow passive, easily swayed, or lacking in strong opinions. But the truth is, nothing could be further from reality.

I am not passive. Or a pushover. Or shy, timid, introverted, people-pleasing, easily manipulated, or easily pressured. I do not avoid conflict, nor do I lack strong opinions. I am not weak, overly accommodating, or vulnerable.

However, I have always been someone with high Emotional Intelligence (E.I.), and there's a world of difference.

I've seen countless instances where E.I. misconstrued as weakness. It's as if having a deep understanding of emotions, both my own and those of others, is somehow a deficit. But it's my superpower.

I'm confident. Motivated. Inspired. Observant. I maintain my boundaries. I communicate thoughtfully. I'm at peace. I respond, not react. I make informed decisions. I don't let others influence my emotions. I'm self-aware, self-regulated, adaptable, and empowered.

My inner voice is clear: I am not defined by the assumptions of others. My ability to navigate complex emotional landscapes unphased is a testament to my strength, not a sign of weakness.

When you see me listening, it's not passivity.

It's observation. It's gathering information, understanding the dynamics at play. When I choose to respond calmly, it's not because I lack passion; it's because I choose to express it with intention and clarity.

Having high E.I. means I understand the power of my emotions and how to manage them effectively. It means I can build genuine connections, navigate difficult conversations, and create a harmonious environment around me. It means I can stand firm in my values while remaining open to understanding different perspectives.

It's about being empowered, not overpowered. It's about being in control, not controlled.
