What does wellness mean to you? My answers may surprise you!

“ In this life, you will have trouble ..”
Not much has changed since John 16:33.
Life, as we all know, doesn't always play out the way we imagine. We will be met with many unexpected struggles, challenging periods, and moments that test us. It's easy to get caught up in these moments and let them overshadow the bigger picture of our lives, but it doesn't have to be that way.
It is possible to navigate these challenges while still nurturing our well-being so that we can define "living well" on our own terms.
For me, wellness is a dynamic, ever-evolving journey that changes based on circumstances. We have to be practical about where we are, what we have in the moment and how to make the best of it. I believe living well shouldn't require a lot of time or money, and that external factors that are beyond our control don't have to dictate our ability to do so.
It's about consciously crafting a life that aligns with my core values and brings me a sense of purpose and joy. It's about recognizing that challenges are inevitable, but they don't have to define my overall experience.
So, how do I stay grounded and ensure I'm living well, even amidst life's inevitable storms? Here are a few mindful reminders that help me stay on track:
1. Values-Driven Actions: Living in alignment with my values is the cornerstone of my well-being. When my actions, relationships, and choices reflect what truly matters to me, I experience a deep sense of integrity and fulfillment.
2. Meaningful Connections: It's not about the quantity of relationships, but the quality. Having one or two good people around is priceless - having 3 or 4, you are truly wealthy! A few genuine, supportive connections based on mutual respect and shared values are invaluable. Whether family, friendships or romantic, these relationships provide a sense of belonging and remind me that I'm not alone.
3. Spiritual Connection: Whether through prayer, nature, art, music or stillness, connecting to something larger than myself offers me faith, hope, and perspective. Regularly engaging in practices that activate my spirit helps me connect to my Creator, giving me a sense of protection, covering and peace. It reminds me that challenges are temporary and that I'm part of something greater.
4. Honoring My Body: My body is my vessel, carrying me through this lifetime. Treating it with respect is essential. It's easy to forget how hard it works on a regular basis to keep me going, even while I sleep! From our lungs maintaining our breath, to our heart pumping our blood and nutrients, to our organs digesting and processing, to our joints and muscle keeping us moving and even down to our microscopic cells. Fueling it with nourishing foods, staying hydrated, moving in ways that feel good, and prioritizing rest allows it to function optimally.
5. Prioritizing Self-Maintenance: Taking care of myself, inside and out, is an act of self-love. Whether it's a skincare routine, a massage, or simply practicing good hygiene, these acts help us feel as good on the inside as we do on the outside, showing that we truly do care about and respect ourselves.
6. Reclaiming Time for Joy: Life shouldn't be solely about work and responsibilities. Hobbies and passions are essential for recharging and finding fulfillment. Whether it's painting, hiking, learning a new language, travel, pursuing a passion or simply reading a good book, these activities remind me that life is meant to be enjoyed.
7. Coping Tools: Wellness isn't about avoiding pain, stress, discomfort or challenges, it's about having the tools to navigate them. Find out what works best for you: Is it a run, therapy, prayer, calling a friend, booking a practitioner, or driving to the beach? Or perhaps it's a glass of wine, CBD, Netflix binge, a day in bed, a night on the town, or a box of chocolates? (hey, lets be honest. There is no judgements, everything in moderation!) Knowing what works for you and having identified these things ahead of time can help you prepare for when things get tough. This helps us cope with challenges a little easier and reminds us that this too shall pass.
Ultimately, "living well" is a deeply personal definition. It's about creating a life that resonates with your unique values and brings you a sense of purpose and joy. It's about finding balance, cultivating meaningful connections, and honoring your mind, body, and spirit.
